The science

What is photobiomodulation?

Red light therapy — clinically known as photobiomodulation (PBM) — works at the cellular level. Light energy penetrates tissue and interacts with cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondrial membrane, triggering a cascade of natural repair processes: increased ATP production, reduced oxidative stress, and improved blood flow to damaged tissue.

The result is real, measurable, and drug-free: reduced inflammation, accelerated tissue repair, and natural pain relief without side effects.

82%
of dogs reduced pain medication by at least half
Source: Randomized controlled trial — American Journal of Veterinary Research, 2022. PBM outperformed meloxicam (prescription NSAID) for reducing canine hip osteoarthritis pain.

The American Animal Hospital Association now describes photobiomodulation as "becoming standard of care in veterinary practice."

Wavelength

Wavelength guide

660nm Red Light — focused, effective, simple.

The Back Therapy Vest delivers 660nm red light — the most studied and clinically established wavelength in photobiomodulation therapy. Single-wavelength simplicity means no settings to learn, no modes to choose — just consistent, targeted therapy at the clinically optimal wavelength for surface and tissue-level recovery.

660nm
Red Light — the primary therapeutic wavelength

Targets the dermal layer and surface tissue. Supports wound healing, coat health, blood circulation stimulation, and collagen regeneration. Stimulates ATP production at the cellular level — the foundational mechanism behind all PBM therapy.

2–5mm tissue penetration
Want deeper tissue coverage? The Solaura Pro Vest delivers 660nm + 850nm + 880nm simultaneously — covering surface tissue, deep muscle, joint capsules, and bone in a single session. Ideal for dogs with widespread joint inflammation or chronic deep-tissue conditions.

Who the Back Therapy Vest is for.

Age-related joint stiffness Hip dysplasia Elbow dysplasia Osteoarthritis Chronic joint inflammation Post-surgical recovery ACL / TPLO recovery Senior dogs 7+ years Daily wellness maintenance Small & medium dogs up to ~55 lbs
What to expect

What your dog may experience with consistent use.

Results vary by dog, condition, and consistency of use. Most commonly reported improvements include:

  • Easier rising from lying positions — less hesitation and effort getting up
  • Reduced reluctance on stairs and inclines
  • Less visible stiffness after walks or periods of rest
  • Improved range of motion and more fluid movement
  • Increased activity and engagement during daily routines
  • Reduced reliance on pain medication — always in consultation with your vet

Most customers notice subtle improvements within 1–2 weeks of daily sessions. More significant changes are typically observed at the 3–4 week mark with consistent use.

Medium
80×40cm · 31.5"×15.75"
Best for medium dogs ~20–55 lbs
Ideal for medium breeds where the panel covers the full back from shoulders to lumbar. Fits dogs in the 20–55 lb range comfortably. This vest is designed for small to medium dogs — for breeds over 55 lbs, consider the Solaura Pro Vest.
Miniature Schnauzer · Corgi · Cocker Spaniel · Whippet · Boston Terrier · Cavalier King Charles
Still not sure?
How to measure your dog for the right fit.
1
Measure back length
With your dog standing, measure from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail. This is your primary measurement.
2
Measure chest girth
Measure around the widest point of the chest, just behind the front legs. The vest straps need to close comfortably — not tight.
3
Compare to panel length
Small panel is 30cm (11.8") tall — ideal for backs up to ~28cm. Medium panel is 40cm (15.75") tall — ideal for backs up to ~40cm. This vest suits small to medium dogs.
4
Two-finger fit check
When fitted, the panel should lie flat against the back. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably under each strap — secure but not restrictive.
Best for small to medium dogs up to approximately 55 lbs. For dogs over 55 lbs, the panel may not provide full lumbar coverage — we recommend the Solaura Pro Vest for larger breeds. Not sure? View the full size guide → or email us at support@solaurapet.com and we'll help you find the right fit.

FAQ

How long does each session take?
The vest has a built-in 20-minute auto-off timer. Power it on, place it on your dog, and it shuts off automatically after 20 minutes. No settings, no guesswork — consistent therapeutic dosing every session.
How quickly will I see results?
Most customers notice subtle changes within 1–2 weeks of daily use — easier rising, less hesitation on stairs, improved mobility after rest. More significant improvements are typically reported at the 3–4 week mark. Consistency is the key variable.
What weight range is this vest designed for?
The Back Therapy Vest is designed for small to medium dogs. The Small size suits dogs up to approximately 20 lbs — Maya, the Puggle who inspired Solaura, wears the Small at around 20 lbs. The Medium suits dogs from 20–55 lbs. For larger breeds over 55 lbs, we recommend the Solaura Pro Vest which offers greater panel coverage.
What size should I get?
Measure your dog's back length (base of neck to base of tail). Small suits dogs up to ~20 lbs with backs up to ~28cm. Medium suits dogs 20–55 lbs with backs up to ~40cm. If you're between sizes, size up. The panel should lie flat from shoulders to the lumbar region. For dogs over 55 lbs, the Pro Vest is the better fit.
Is this the same as the Pro Vest?
No. The Back Therapy Vest delivers a single 660nm wavelength — the most clinically studied PBM wavelength, ideal for daily maintenance, surface tissue recovery, and straightforward joint support. The Pro Vest delivers three wavelengths simultaneously (660nm + 850nm + 880nm) for deeper tissue penetration and multiple therapy modes. If your dog has widespread joint disease, chronic conditions, or you want maximum therapeutic coverage, the Pro Vest is the stronger choice.
How do I know it's working?
The LED indicator light confirms the vest is active during the session. You won't feel heat — red light therapy is non-thermal. The changes you'll observe are behavioural: how easily your dog rises, how they move after rest, how they engage on walks. These are the markers to watch.

  • "I was skeptical. Truly. But after watching Biscuit struggle on the stairs for six months and spending $400 a month on vet laser sessions that only helped while we kept going, I was willing to try anything. Three weeks in I actually cried. He climbed onto the couch by himself for the first time in almost a year. We haven't missed a daily session since."

  • "I already use red light therapy on myself so when I saw this existed for dogs I ordered it the same day. Our 9-year-old Lab has hip dysplasia and I'd been wanting something more consistent than clinic visits. Six weeks in he's moving better than he has in two years. My husband was skeptical. He's the one who puts it on him every night now."

"Duke had TPLO surgery on his rear leg and recovery was going slower than his vet projected. A friend in a dog rehab group recommended red light therapy. We started the wrap at week three post-op. By week six his vet said she was genuinely surprised — he was ahead of every milestone she'd set. She asked me what we were doing differently."
